My neighbours had a Wasp nest in their backyard under some long dried grass and wire netting , i poured some petrol near the entrance and covered it up for the night , the next morning I dug it up . The nest was wintering , as such there was only about 600 wasps in it with around 100 of them being queens getting ready to leave in the coming Spring . I've also posted some info from one of my childhood NZ insect books about nests . As a rule NZ wasp nests died out every Winter because of the cold but occasionally some grew to monstrous sizes .
Yesterday (11/6/23) i was moving firewood and luckily was wearing gloves as i come across this Queen hibernating amongst the wood .... i was stung on the palm of my hand (too silly to wear gloves back in the day ) by one hibernating in an old hessian sack about 30 years ago , not fun belive me , way more painful than a worker .
24/11/23 :- A couple of weeks ago my son was welding at work and a European Wasp flew under his helmet and got a bit too close to his weld , as you can see the radiant heat killed it and singed it a bit , it also melted it's wings off .
