Please distribute this to anyone who might be interested.  There will be two multiple year jobs announced soon as well. Thanks,Mike Ivie =14.0ptSeasonal Field and Lab Technicians: The Wild Bees of Montana Project  8 Technician Positions in the Ivie Lab at Montana State University Location: Field technicians will be based in northwest or southeast Montana, exact duty stations to be determined. The fieldwork will be conducted in/throughout Northwestern and Southeastern Montana. Basic housing and field transportation are provided, camping is required. Lab technicians will be based in Bozeman and will work in the Montana Entomology Collection (MTEC) (housing not provided). Lab technicians will have the opportunity for occasional field work in Southwestern and Central Montana (field transportation provided, camping required).   Position descriptions: Field Techs:We are seeking 6 motivated and experienced summer field technicians to conduct bee surveys as part of the Wild Bees of Montana Project, a 15-year study to document the fauna of the state. The field technicians will work in 2-person teams to sample bees using a variety of traps (bee bowls, blue vanes, Malaise, Lindgren funnels, etc.) and net collecting. Net collected bees will be processed (pinned or pointed) in the field at the end of each day. Extensive driving on roads of variable quality will be involved.  Camping for multiple days in a row will be frequent while doing fieldwork. One crew may be involved in wilderness work, which may involve backpacking, horse/mule packing and light aircraft in remote areas with grizzly bears, wolves and mountain lions.  Crews will travel to the MTEC in Bozeman approximately monthly to drop off mounted bees and trap samples for further processing in the lab. Lab Techs: We are also seeking 2 experienced technicians who will work in the lab at the  MTEC to process incoming field samples, including data entry, sorting/cleaning, and drying and pinning/pointing bee specimens to museum-quality standards. Occasional field work is also a possibility if there is interest and experience. Qualifications:Required:·         Dependability, punctuality, and consistency in producing high-quality work.·         Must be able to work long hours in the field, often in harsh conditions and in remote locations without cellular service or internet. Mosquitoes to be expected.·         Must be in good physical condition and able to carry field and personal equipment and walk long distances over uneven terrain.·         Must be comfortable camping in remote locations (no electricity, restrooms or running water).·         Must be able to sit for long periods (e.g., traveling to field sites or pinning bees in lab).·         Experience with field and/or lab data collection.·         Experience navigating using physical and digital maps and a GPS unit.·         Must be able to communicate with a variety of people, including land-managers, ranchers, farmers, and the public.·         Excellent attention to detail and ability to focus despite often monotonous tasks.·         Excellent time management and organizational skills.·         Must be able to work independently and in groups.·         Must have a valid driver’s license and legally be able to work in the US. Preferred:·         Background in Entomology or experience collecting bees or other insects.·         Experience curating (pinning, pointing, labeling, databasing, etc.) insects.·         General knowledge of native bees.·         Experience identifying native and non-native flowering plants (trees, shrubs, forbs).·         Experience with backcountry camping, fieldwork, and horses or other pack animals. Duration: 01 June through mid-August 2024. Hours: 40 hours per week. Pay: $17 per hour. To apply: Please email a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references in a single document to Michael Ivie (This email address is being protected from spambots.
