About the Job:
We’re looking for a permanent (full or part time) Senior Taxonomist or Ecologist with subterranean fauna taxonomy experience. This position is office based with the potential for field work incorporated. The Invertebrate Taxonomist or Ecologist will assist the Invertebrate Fauna team to identify and organise subterranean invertebrate fauna specimens and data for further molecular analysis and reporting. The majority of our work is for environmental impact assessment and the morphological identification of a variety of invertebrate fauna groups
enables us to provide accurate assessments of subterranean fauna biodiversity.

Job Role:
Identify a range of subterranean invertebrate taxa groups to the lowest taxonomic levels possibly using existing keys
Slide mount and dissect specimens, especially micro-crustacea, for further identification using existing keys and other reference materials,
Lead laboratory team to sort and organise scientific samples
Ensure accuracy in data collection and recording
Follow processing procedures and look for efficiencies in workflow
Manage specimens within storage areas, ensuring correct storage and handling techniques
Guide and mentor up and coming ecologists/parataxonomists and collaborate with senior subterranean fauna ecologists.

Requirements:
Post-graduate qualification in zoology, biological or environmental science or similar
Taxonomic experience in subterranean fauna groups especially Crustacea is ideal, however any invertebrate taxonomic experience is preferable
Proven ability to manage and coordinate a small team of sorters and parataxonomists
Lab experience, particularly handling, identifying and storing invertebrate specimens; and
An understanding of data requirements for consulting survey reports
Project management experience
One or two years of experience with subterranean fauna field surveys, ideally with an environmental consultancy, is preferred but not essential.
